To make your own loose snus, you need the following equipment:
-
- Oven
-
- Bucket
-
- Electric mixer
As well as the following ingredients:
-
- Tobacco Powder from www.makesnus.eu 1 Kg
-
- Water, 1 + 0,6 Liters
-
- Salt (in these contexts sometimes called sodium chloride) 110 gr
-
- Sodium carbonate 100 gr
-
- Glycerin or glycerol (yes, it’s the same thing) 60 gr
-
- Any aroma for flavoring
None of these products should be difficult to get hold of. For the snuff kit you bought, you will receive a simple guide to follow. But the process looks roughly like this regardless of which snuff kit you buy (for 1kg of tobacco powder)
Instructions, step by step how to make your own snus
-
- Prepare all the ingredients
Set the oven to 90 degrees. Boil 1 liter of water. Pour 110 grams of salt into the hot water and mix until it dissolves. Let the temperature drop to around 50 degrees. Mix the raw tobacco with the hot salt water in a bucket. Mix thoroughly with an electric whisk.
- Prepare all the ingredients
-
- Mix the mixture and place in the oven so it is pre-baked
Usually, the snuff kit includes two jars that you will now put the tobacco mixture in. Flatten the mixture with a spoon and close the jars tightly with the included lids. The jars are then placed on the rack in the oven and must stand there for 24 hours.
- Mix the mixture and place in the oven so it is pre-baked
-
- Add water and sodium carbonate
When 24 hours have passed, pour the tobacco mixture back into the bucket. Boil 6 deciliters of water. Dissolve 100 grams of sodium carbonate with the water and let it cool to around 50 degrees. Pour the mixture into your bucket and mix again, preferably with an electric whisk
- Add water and sodium carbonate
-
- Finish baking in the oven
Then place the tobacco mixture back into the jars, finish with lids and set them for another 12 hours. Still at 90 degrees.
- Finish baking in the oven
-
- Add glycerine and any seasoning
When 12 hours have passed (36 hours in the oven in total), the tobacco mixture is taken out to cool. Then, for the last time, pour the mixture into the bucket. Now add 60 g of glycerin and mix with the electric whisk. It is at this stage that you can also flavor the snus with the aroma of your choice.
- Add glycerine and any seasoning
-
- After ripening in the fridge
The snus should then be kept in the refrigerator to mature for minimum 5 to 7 days but it will develop a deeper and more mature taste if it stores for approx 3-4 weeks. Do not store it in the refrigerator for longer than 3-4 months and be careful about hygiene. If you plan to keep the snus longer than 3-4 months then we recommend that you store it in a freezer.
